PEATTU Looks At Private Education In Anger

A memo titled, “Sector conferences and other meetings” signed last November 20, 2012 by Afu Stephens, President of the Presbyterian Education Authority Teachers’ Trade Union, PEATTU, a copy of which Chronicle has, is addressed to the North West Regional Delegate of Secondary and Basic Educations. In it, PEATTU wails why the private sector is negated when sector conferences hold. He urged the two services to consider them as partners/stakeholders in matters of education and be included. Afu also noted that there are many things surrounding the private sector, which can jointly be redressed, if presented during sector conferences.
PEATTU also lashed at other areas in education, where the private sector is sidelined, even though they are active partners with government to educate Cameroonian children. Elucidating, Afu noted how the private sector is left out in the allowances for Documentation and Research. Also that they have not been considered for longevity when categorizing examiners for the GCE and other examinations. Again, they have never been considered when salaries are raised for civil servants.
Though addressed to the NW regional delegates for Basic and Secondary education, PEATTU has also drawn the attention of the ministers of Basic, Secondary and Labour respectively. Also, the Presbyterian Education Secretary and the Executive Secretary of CATTU have also been copied. PEATTU’s disgust about sector conferences was discussed at their National Executive Committee meeting last September 8, 2012 in Bamenda. This after noting the bias in discussions and presentations at the last sector conferences, which focused entirely on the government schools and colleges.
