Dr. Ngwanyam Coronated

One of the highpoints of the St. Louis convocation ceremony was the solemn coronation of that institution’s director, Dr. Nick Ngwanyam and his better half, Florence Manjong Titu, by the North West Fons’ Union, NOWEFU.
Presenting Dr. Nick Ngwanyam before the coronation proper, the President of the North West Fons’ Union, Fon Teche Njei of Ngyenmuwa said Dr. Nick Ngwanyam was born in Nkambe central of Donga Mantung division but hails from Ntundip village of Ndu sub division of that division. He said Dr. Ngwanyam  had always wished to either be a medical doctor, Agric officer or pilot and finally his dreams have come true as he is now a successful medical doctor and his wife, Florence Manjong Titu of Mbot village of Donga Mantung is equally a successful pharmacist, both of whom have 4 children.
At St. Louis working with other committed teachers, Fon Teche doffed his hat to Dr. Nick Ngwanyam for having nurtured many young Cameroonians. According to the fons, what is most remarkable about Dr. Ngwanyam and the wife, is their attachment to social work, development and the concern for the community and other people. ‘They believe in the respect of humanity, social justice, the support of youths and sound professional education”. They said Dr. Ngwanyam is active in the education of the community on radio, TV and newspapers talking on issues that affect lives including health, hygiene, politics, education, agriculture, development and mind set changes that are needed for human growth.
According to the fons, “Dr. Ngwanyam and the wife have given scholarships to the tune of 85.2 million FCFA to students from North West Region and across the country. They have so far trained the youths at their institution who occupy professional positions in many hospitals and health facilities in Cameroon and beyond”. They noted with satisfaction the tremendous growth of St. Louis University institute and the impact it has on Bamenda and the whole nation especially as there are so many francophones who have come to study at St. Louis feeling at home.
On this backdrop, the fons decided to honour Dr. Ngwanyam and wife publicly by coronating Dr. Ngwanyam with the title, “Mbang fon” meaning “the walking stick of the fons). In this regard, the North West fons declared to work together with Dr. Ngwanyam and wife for the growth of the nation and Cameroon as a whole.
Understanding that Dr. Ngwanyam wants to be a senator, the fons on behalf of the North West people rallied behind him “as a person because he convinces us as a good leader for our region”.
Dr. Ngwanyam was dressed with a royal garment “Njap”, a traditional cap and a decorated staff, while the wife was equally dressed with a royal garment with a cap helmed with cowries.
Some 15 fons were present, including the Fon of Mbatu (Treasurer NOWEFU), Fon Fobuzi of Chomba, Fon Fomuki of Goneku amongst others. The excitement at the Mandela Garden was total, given the varied displays that characterized the ceremony. Numerous dance and choral groups animated the ceremony.
The award of a certificate to endorse the title was also another added touch to the ceremony. Prior to the handing, Fon Teche noted that Dr. Nick Ngwanyam has been seen as an illustrious son of North West, who has made the fons proud. He then read out the inscription of the certificate: NOWEFU has awarded a traditional recognition for a Great Achiever, an illustrious son, Dr. Nick Ngwanyam”, the tilte ‘Mbang Fon NOWEFU’ (the fons’ walking stick) signed by Fons Teche and Zofoa as NOWEFU President General and Secretary General.
The convocation kick-started with a eucharistic celebration: a mass celebrated by Rev Father Raphael Latum. He drew afflatus from the motto, ‘Health Character for Excellence’ to bring out salient issues. Dr. Nick Ngwanyam himself qualified the sermon as a veritable academic discourse. Rev Father Raphael Latum opined that those coming and going out of St. Louis, University should keep the motto as their watchword. He said, in matters of health, this cannot be compromised. He posited that a person who lives by principles is in himself whole, adding that the test of being principled is honesty. Therefore, in matters of health, Cameroon needs people of character; men and women who cannot be bought over, who put character above wealth.
As the mass ended, a solemn procession of the graduating students, according to their areas of specialization ensued. Lecturers too, took part in the march. Another instance was when graduates raised their hands to take and oath of commitment; then the presentation of certificates, diplomas/degrees. This was handed to each of the graduating students by the dignitaries present.
There was also a major distinction of the best all round graduating student; Dipende Kingsley Mofor of Pharmacy received the CEO’s prize.
