President Paul Biya has never attended the investiture ceremony of any American president. Opposition leader, Ni John Fru Ndi attended Bill Clinton’ investiture in 1993 and almost made himself a hero. It is believed that whoever attends or is invited for such a big occasion should be a person of mettle. President Paul Biya did not attend Barrack Obama’s investiture some 4 years ago in Washington; Biya too did not even take part at the investiture of Francois Hollande mid this year as French president. Yet, his recent message of congratulations to Obama following his reelection last November 6, 2012 has put analysts at work.
Why did Biya despatch a congratulatory message to Obama even before his investiture? Many have raised this question to even jump into concluding that Biya is lobbying Obama to be invited for his investiture in January.
In his message of congratulations, Biya writes: “Mr. President, on the occasion of your brilliant reelection to the presidency of the United States of America, it gives me great pleasure to extend to you my sincere and warm congratulations, and to wish you every success in the continuation of your lofty and delicate task”.
“Your victory reflects the trust and hope that the great American people have put in you. I take this joyous opportunity to restate my willingness to work with you, as in the past, to strengthen the close ties existing between our two countries, and for the advent of a world of peace, justice and solidarity. Accept Mr. President, the renewed assurances of my highest consideration”. Signed Paul Biya
