NW Fons Coronate Dr. Nick Ngwanyam “Mbang Fon’The 9th convocation of St. Louis University Institute of Health and Biomedical Sciences, Bamenda that took place last Saturday, November 24, 2012 was celebrated in pomp and pageantry. This was at the Mandela Garden, in the presence of the personal representatives of the Ministers of Public Health and Higher Education respectively, including that of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Buea (UB). At least two thousand well-wishers converged at the Mandela Garden, the esplanade of St. Louis University to witness the occasion body and soul.
The North West Regional delegates for Public Health, Dr. Ndiforchu Victor and Wilfred Gabsa who represented the Ministers of Public Health and Higher Education respectively, all regretted that their ministers would have loved to be at the occasion in person but for the fact that they were all engaged in some other important state duties. However, they assured the St. Louis management that the two ministers are in smooth working partnership with the institution as well as other qualified private institutions in the country that train health personnel.
The health minister’s representative, Dr. Ndiforchu Victor, who said until 1986, all health personnel were trained by government at CUSS Yaounde, was pleased to disclose that in 2005, St. Louis University Institute of Health and Biomedical Sciences was authorized to train students in several programmes both for the private and public sector consumption especially as there is acute shortage of medical personnel in the country. He hailed St. Louis management for spending money and other resources to ferry in technical know-how from as far as India and Germany. “This allows the graduates of St. Louis University to meet up with the challenges wherever they go within the country and beyond”.
He said Cameroon government is already enjoying the services of the St. Louis graduates and the government is prepared to continue recruiting the products of St. Louis University.
The representative of the Minister of Higher Education, Wilfred Gabsa, who is the Inspector of Academic Affairs at the Ministry of Higher Education, was pleased that with the first batch of Bachelor of Technology already graduated at St. Louis; most medical schools in the country were going to recruit them in their staff pool. He said St. Louis is the vision of one person, Dr. Nick Ngwanyam, who is now successfully assisting the government and Cameroonians as a whole as far as health issues are concerned and deserves total encouragement. While calling on other Cameroonians to emulate Dr. Nick Ngwanyam, he announced that his ministry was in no distance future, going to crack down on clandestine schools in the country most of whom are rather unteaching the students.
UB Proud of St. Louis Products
The representative of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Buea, Prof Victor Julius Ngoh- the Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Cooperation and Research stressed that the University of Buea has for several years running, been working night and day monitoring teaching and assessment of work to ensure that the graduates of St. Louis are the same like those of UB. “The senate of UB met and deliberated and approved the results of the graduates of St. Louis. And so given the fact that UB is very strict and the world classification of universities put UB first in Cameroon, we challenge the graduates of St. Louis to work hard so as to maintain standards”. He opined that St. Louis graduates are carrying the torch of both St. Louis and the University of Buea.
The Director and Vice Director of St. Louis, Dr. Nick Ngwanyam and Tapong Ronate, were both appreciative of the fact that St. Louis has all along been receiving backings from the Ministers of Higher Education and Public Health most especially as government gave the institution the authorization to operate.
Dr. Ngwanyam who disclosed that University of Buea supervises and assesses the work of the programmes at St. Louis University, said they were working closely with some German universities to assist St. Louis in pharmacy programmes. He said it was his wish that St. Louis producers drugs in Cameroon soon.
At the St. Louis 9th Convocation batch occasion, some 248 students graduated with the Higher Professional Diplomas while 26 others bagged Bachelors of Technology degrees being its first batch; with a total of 499 students matriculated.
St. Louis Programmes
According to St. Louis Director, several programmes are offered in his institution viz; Higher Professional Diploma (HPD), Nursing, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Physiotherapy, Radiology and Ultrasonology and Midwifery.
At the Bachelor or degree programmes, St. Louis offers Nursing, Radiology and Ultrasonography, Hospital Health management, Physiotherapy and Medical Laboratory Sciences, while the new products in perspective are; Bachelor of Technology in Midwifery, Bachelor in Pharm D for 6 years.
