General Strike Against MTN

ameroon National Federation of Trade and Services Trade Unions championed by FESCOS-CAM, RNF and NAMOREPS have called a “general strike nationwide from Monday October 15, 2012 at mid-night to protest against the non respect of our sovereignty and judiciary”.
In a press briefing in Bamenda on October 8, 2012, the Founder cum coordinator of FESCOS-CAM; Mbah Boris, added that the strike is against the flagrant violation of Cameroon laws, legal decisions and fundamental rights of consumers of Cameroonians provoked by the notorious multinational MTN-Cameroon.
According to Mbah Boris, the strike will begin October 15 and end for 21 days with Cameroonians shouting, “no for the re-colonization of Cameroon ” unless MTN respects the fundamental rights of Cameroonians.
The Cameroon National Federation of Trade and Services Trade Unions, is demanding for the right to access of essential needs and services of MTN, right to guarantee in the goods and services provided, right to information, right to free choice, right to representation, right to legal suit and equitable justice and the right to education. The trade unions ipso facto issued an ultimatum calling on Cameroonians to strike for 21 days “unless MTN solves the 7 major claims put out and defended by FESCOS-CAM in the name of the Cameroon people and residents”.
Some of the claims outlined by the trade unions in their communiqué are; the strict respect of laws and institutions by everyone; immediate payment of the integral sum awarded to their member by legal instances; respect of consumer rights and put in place visible and operational mechanisms to ensure the application of the consumer rights by MTN, stop the scamming of consumers, immediate stop of network problems, re-establishment of the profit margin for all the distribution chain of MTN products and services and the immediate reduction of communication tariff as in other neighbouring African countries.
The multinational MTN authorities were informed that Cameroon laws and legal decisions are non-negotiable.
The FESCOS-CAM chieftain, Mbah Boris told journalists at the press briefing that one of the trade unions’ members, Edison Fru Ndi, sued MTN for breach of contract and was awarded over 1.9 billion FCFA but since then, MTN has never bothered to pay which is an abuse to Cameroon judiciary. He said recently, the MTN officials rather proposed to pay 850 million FCFA to Edison Fru Ndi “warning that if he fails to take the amount, he should be ready to fight with MTN for the next 3 years for the money to be paid”. He said several Cameroonians are victims of MTN exploitation, instancing yet another case where a Douala based Cameroonian sued MTN and was awarded 3 billion FCFA yet MTN has refused to pay, a clear evidence that MTN, a South African multinational company, does not respect Cameroon judiciary.
